چکیده

We present a framework for studying the problem of media streaming in technology and cost heterogeneous environments. We first address the problem of efficient streaming in a technologyheterogeneous setting. We employ random linear network coding to simplify the packet selection strategies and alleviate issues such as duplicate packet reception. Then, we study the problem of media streaming from multiple cost-heterogeneous access networks. Our objective is to characterize analytically the trade-off between access cost and user experience. We model the Quality of user Experience (QoE) as the probability of interruption in playback as well as the initial waiting time. We design and characterize various control policies, and formulate the optimal control problem using a Markov Decision Process (MDP) with a probabilistic constraint. We present a characterization of the optimal policy using the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation. For a fluid approximation model, we provide an exact and explicit characterization of a threshold policy and prove its optimality using the HJB equation. Our simulation results show that under properly designed control policy, the existence of alternative access technology as a complement for a primary access network can significantly improve the user experience without any bandwidth over-provisioning. Learning to Predict Streaming Video QoE: Distortions, Rebuffering and Memory

Mobile streaming video data accounts for a large and increasing percentage of wireless network traffic. The available bandwidths of modern wireless networks are often unstable, leading to difficulties in delivering smooth, high-quality video. Streaming service providers such as Netflix and YouTube attempt to adapt their systems to adjust in response to these bandwidth limitations by changing th...

A QoE-Aware P2P Streaming System based on Scalable Video Coding

P2P streaming has attracted much attention recently with promises for higher revenues and better load distribution. Still, the majority of P2P video streaming systems today employ the one-size-fits-all concept where the same video bit-rate is offered to all users. Here the promising H.264/Scalable Video Coding (SVC) standard is seen as a necessity in not only supporting heterogeneous resources,...

QoE-Aware Proactive Caching of Scalable Videos Over Small Cell Networks

The explosion of mobile video traffic imposes tremendous challenges on present cellular networks. To alleviate the pressure on backhaul links and to enhance the quality of experience (QoE) of video streaming service, small cell base stations (SBS) with caching ability are introduced to assist the content delivery. In this paper, we present the first study on the optimal caching strategy of scal...

QoE-aware Traffic Shaping for HTTP Adaptive Streaming

HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) has become a prevailing technology for media delivery nowadays. It enables high quality streaming of media content over the internet delivered from conventional HTTP web servers. However, its on-off traffic pattern constructed by segmented transmission can lead to some performance problems, such as instability, inefficiency and unfairness, while multiple clients co...
